Hello, crafters! Thank you for joining me today as I create a fun, shaker birthday card using the new Kat Scrappiness Crafters Essentials #2 die set. This set contains a full cover-plate die with chevron cutouts and full stitched detailing. The complimentary pieces can be used to enhance this cutout piece, or used in any combination you desire. For today’s project I decided to use three different dies, so let’s go ahead and get into the details.
For the cover plate die, I found this awesome sheet of 12×12 birthday paper in my stash. It already had the “Happy Day!” sentiment on it, as well as the colorful dots, so I let that set my color scheme. I also cut out a strip of blue card stock so that I had all the little chevrons in that pretty color.
On the backside of my panel I ran a strip of double-sided tape over the cut out openings (you can see it in the picture above.) Then I just laid the blue chevrons into place, which fit perfectly like puzzle pieces. This really took very little time, but it still creates a very pretty look. I could have used multiple colors for this step, but I didn’t want it to end up too busy. Too many individual colors vying for attention on a single card will end up looking messy instead of fun.
For my next step I cut the stitched flag die out of a sunny yellow card stock, and then cut a stitched square out of the center which will become my shaker window. The square die is from the new Kat Scrappiness Crafters Essentials #1 die set. As an accent piece, I also cut the little stitched banner die from some black card stock. I’m so glad that my patterned paper had that black circle on it – black is my favorite accent color to use!
For my shaker window, I added a piece of acetate to the back of my flag piece and let the liquid adhesive dry thoroughly. Not all tapes will hold the acetate securely, so if you’re not sure, just use a nice paste adhesive that dries clear and you’ll be fine. I added some foam tape pieces around the backside of the flag, both to secure the sequins from spilling out and also give them a little room to shake around. You’ll notice that I trimmed the top edge of my flag to better fit my card, otherwise it would cover the Happy Day! sentiment. I then added this super colorful “Rainbow Splash” Kat Scrappiness sequins mix to my shaker and secured it to my card.
For just a bit more color, I sprinkled in a bit of the “Hearts On Fire” Kat Scrappiness confetti, which is a great mix of different sized hearts in a lovely shade of red. I particularly like that these hearts aren’t glittery – they are neutral enough to fit into many different kinds of projects.
The final touch was adding the little black banner. I happened to find a stamp from a birthday stamp set that fit it perfectly, so I stamped it in VersaMark sticky ink and then added my Hero Arts White embossing powder. This powder always melts smoothly, and isn’t too thick even for delicate letters like these. I popped this banner up on foam tape as well and let the one end slightly overlap my flag piece.
And that is my finished card! I hope that you enjoyed this project as much as I did, and that you give shaker cards a try if you haven’t already.
